006 | The Future of Layoffs + Pivot Tips

Welcome back to the one and only Work Club.

This week, we’re exploring the landscape of work transitions.

I'm in a shift right now. And I've had quite a few career shifts—from working as an English teacher to working in client services to entering web3.

In this issue, we’re unpacking current tech layoffs and sharing tips and strategies to turn a daunting change into an opportunity.

Whether you’re thinking about pivoting to a new industry, going freelance, or navigating a forced transition, the Bread & Rose Work Club is here to support you in taking your next steps with confidence.

📓 Layoffs | The Necessary Pivot

Post-MBA, I know 5 of my colleagues who were laid off and a handful more who are actively planning how to exit their current job. This topic is one which I started writing about in my daily LinkedIn journey here. Layoffs are naturally a part of work, but the recent reasons behind layoffs are staggering. For one, companies have been recording record profits.

On the other hand, the thought of a recession looms above us, according to an August 2024 jobs report.

Today’s layoffs are different from those in 2008 or 2020, driven by new forces like AI and overseas hiring.

In this age where anything seems possible, we’re all faced with a pressing question: If I could be replaced at any moment, do I enjoy what I’m doing?

Over the past few months, I’ve connected with dozens of freelancers and entrepreneurs who have felt this same shift. It’s often said that you are the average of those you surround yourself with. Thus, my own shift in my types of connections sparked my passion for discussing the Future of Work which has inspired my own solopreneur journey.

Along this path, I've learned the road is not all sunshine and roses (as, in this letter, we'd like to believe). Some recent transitioners have reconsidered their decision to leave traditional jobs. Others have found success by working as a contractor for their prior employer or landing a role after attending a tech boot camp and doing work for free.

With a recession looming, here are all the tactics I've learned to pivot successfully.

🆓 Tip 1: Work for Free

The idea of working for free can feel counterintuitive, but it’s a powerful way to pivot and gain the experience needed to break into new fields. Many transitioning professionals have used this approach to build portfolios, prove their skills, and open doors to new opportunities.

My friend who pivoted into a more tech-heavy role through a boot camp did so because the program required them to take on pro-bono work. It was this hands-on experience that solidified their new skills and opened doors to a full-time role.

Here's the secret (starting to catch on): No degree is needed to work at Google. Similarly, you don't need to pay for a boot camp to learn to work for free.

The internet is a canvas of opportunity. Each project, even unpaid, adds to your story, making you the obvious choice when the right opportunity finally comes along. Show up and offer value, even before the paycheck comes.

🕰️ Tip 2: Reflect on your Past

Pivots are never as spontaneous as they may appear to outsiders. Usually, there are inner patterns we display in our activities which we may not notice immediately. Sometimes, the best way forward is to look back.

If you're looking to make a change, I believe there are hints of your strengths in past roles. Sometimes the best way forward is to look back.

You don’t need to reinvent yourself completely when shifting careers. Reflecting on your past roles, projects, hobbies, and even your childhood can reveal skills, experiences, and interests you’ve overlooked. I’ve seen many people pivot by tapping into their past—like a friend who rediscovered her love for design after a layoff, leading her to pivot into UX.

Think back to what you enjoyed doing before your current role, or even before your last pivot. What got you excited? What projects made you lose track of time? As always, I recommend The Artist's Way for any type of transition.

🌐 Tip 3: Create a New Network

LinkedIn, LinkedIn, LinkedIn—I wouldn’t have pivoted into web3 without it. For most, LinkedIn offers something unique: a welcoming space to connect with those in your desired field, unlike X, Instagram, or TikTok, where connections can feel less direct. (Note: If you’re in web3, using Web3 may surprise you—X is usually the go-to for web3 connections).

Your network truly is your net worth. During a recent Connection Power-Hour, a friend landed a collaboration opportunity, and others got on follow-up calls during quick 1-on-1 chats. Proof that the right connections can open doors.

Networking doesn’t have to be intimidating—sometimes, you just need a space to start. That’s why I’ve been hosting group sessions with 1on1 breakout rooms, helping people connect effortlessly.

💭 Final Thoughts

In today’s job market, a degree alone won’t set you apart. Employers and clients are looking for skills, adaptability, and a proactive learning mindset that extends beyond traditional education. This shift is prompting many to rethink their careers, explore new fields, or dive into freelancing.

The Future of Work offers endless opportunities.

But with more choices comes greater indecision—a concept known as Hick's Law. The best approach? Pick one resource or path and commit to it.

A well-lived career is now defined by your ability to pivot, upskill, and add value. Whether transitioning from corporate to freelance, changing industries or starting your own venture, it’s all about what you can do and how you grow.

⚡️ Updates

As I've shared in the previous letter, I'm holding these Connection Power-hours where individuals are put into 1on1 breakout rooms with 3 individuals to connect in a speed-networking fashion.
